Safety and the Aluminum Bat vs. Wood Bat Debate

At high schools and colleges across the nation, the debate about aluminum bat safety continues. Play Ball USA and Ron Cacini offer helpful words in this video. Cacini doesn’t try to convince you of an answer to the alumnium vs. wood question. Instead, he explains that it’s proper technique, bat weight, and bat length, that will help boost safety for those whose leagues use aluminum bats. He gives a general explanation of bat exit speed ratio. Cacini doesn’t talk much about wood bats, so it does have an air of advocating for aluminum.

For a casual video shoot in a batting cage, the former Houston farmhand really has a decent swing.

I think that aluminum bats are alright for little kids but to prevent safety problems i would prefer that at the age of 13 and higher kids should be required to use wooden bats

  2. DeMarini Voodoo Says:

Loved the video. I have no issue with younger players using aluminum bats as it does help the offensive game. However, when a player reaches the age of 14 I think it becomes very dangerous for any pitcher to face hitters with big barreled aluminum bats. I have personally witnessed a pitcher taking one in the face before he was through with his follow through. At 14 pitchers are still at a distance of 56 feet and a lot of 14 year olds look like full grown men and the reaction time is just not sufficient enough. The safety of young players and pitchers should always come first.

Personally, I believe advocating the use of aluminum diminishes the game and skills of the players. The use of aluminum bats in baseball is analogous to the use of steroids in sports. It distorts the game and not for the better.
